Willits Elementary Charter School
A Free K-5 Alternative
Kara brings years of experience in Elementary classrooms across the U.S. and in several countries: from an art-intensive public school in Japan, to an impoverished yet effective Nicaraguan classroom, a rural, Reggio Emilia based Massachusetts charter school, to a many schools here in Mendocino County. While earning her Master’s degree at the Harvard Graduate School of Education she focused on how charter schools can tap into the innate curiosity and creativity of children to reach their educational goals.
After attending the Institute for Central American Development Studies, Kara went on to earn a B.A. from Grinnell College and a Master’s degree from Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is committed to creating a diverse community and collaborating with staff and families to weave Spanish into the curriculum. She has worked with Spanish speakers in many contexts: foster children and adolescent mothers in Costa Rica, Redwood Coast Regional Center consumers, Boston Public school students, and others.
As a Service Coordinator and Early Start Program Coordinator for Lake and Mendocino Counties, she provided leadership for inter-agency efforts to ensure that all of our students received a quality education tailored to their needs. Kara has served on the Board of Directors for La Vida Charter School, facilitated a forum of international educators, and has extensive process facilitation, management, and development experience. She looks forward to collaborating with the community and families of Willits Elementary Charter School to realize a powerful new vision of how we educate our children in Mendocino County.
